Afton Motorsports Park set to host the Short Track Super Nationals
With seven races in the books and the season winding down, the best short track drivers will be heading to Afton Motorsports Park on October 11 and 12. This historic track is located just outside the Town of Afton, New York, at one of the oldest running fairgrounds in the State.
The Mods will hit the track on Friday for open practice in anticipation of Saturday’s main event. The CRA Sprint Car Series will also be on hand that night along with Sportsman (Open and Crate) and the Modified dash.
The main event on Saturday dubbed “Working Man’s Race” will see the best in the Short Track series battle it out for $5,500 in cash along with the points.
Matt Sheppard is the current points leader with Stewart Friesen just three points behind. Former series champion, Andy Bachetti, is 17 points behind the leader, but still has a good chance in the championship hunt.
Mat Williamson along with Mike Gular round of the top five and both are looking to move up in the points before going onto the final race at Orange County Fair Speedway on October 24.
As in past years, this race has attracted well over 50 Modifieds to challenge the “Working Man’s Race” trophy and will likely do the same this year. Saturday’s event will also host the STSS Crate Sportsman championship, which drew over 50 cars last season to this final race in the Sportsman series.
This event as in past years is one of the best races in the North East and, in many ways, outperforms many of the big shows that run that very same weekend, without all the pomp and pageantry — just shear hard racing.
