Billy Dunn Completes 2011 Season With a 9th and 15th at Super DIRTcar Series World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway
Craig Revelle – Finish Line Web Design

November 8, 2011

It seems it was just a short time ago that the 2011 season began. With the World Finals in Charlotte, North Carolina now complete, the season has reached its conclusion. After a long drive back to Watertown, New York, Dunn will have several months to look back on a great season, and work to achieve their goals for 2012.

The first on track action of the week took place on Thursday, as time trials and qualifying for both Friday night and Saturday night took place. In the first round of time trials, Dunn posted the 14th fastest speed out of the 31 cars registered at The Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Dunn was sixth fastest in his group though, and lined up on the outside of the third row for his qualifying heat race. Dunn move up quickly in the eight lap qualifier, and battled his way to second place, locking himself into Friday’s 40 lap main event. Dunn was 12th in time trials for Saturday night’s show, but rain postponed the qualifying heats until Saturday.

When the action resumed on Friday, Dunn was fast, posting the third fastest speed in practice. With his strong heat race run, Dunn lined up sixth in the 40 lap main event. With just three laps complete, he had moved up to third place, and was running strong in the opening laps. By lap eight, Dunn had slipped back one spot to fourth place, but still running very well in the first segment of Friday’s 40 lap feature. When racing resumed, Dunn maintained his fourth place position, and the race was slowed yet again on a lap 14 yellow. On the ensuing restart, Dunn grabbed the third spot briefly before settling back into fourth, but continued to show that he had a strong car. In the closing laps, he dropped back and crossed the finish line in ninth place.

Saturday’s events started with qualifying heats that were postponed from Thursday night. Dunn lined up fourth in his heat race, and finished in the same spot despite a great deal of pressure on the third place car. The fourth place finish in the heat put Dunn 14th to start the night’s 40 lap main event. Unlike Friday’s events when Dunn had one of the fastest cars early, he seemed to struggle with the change in track conditions on Saturday, and battle to a 15th place finish in the season ending race.

“We had a great season overall, but we would have liked to have had a better final race”, says Dunn. The car just didn’t perform as well as it did earlier in the weekend. I have to thank all of our sponsors, my Dad, and Uncle Tim, and all of the great race fans that have followed us this season. We look forward to getting back on the track in 2012.

Billy Dunn and the Number One Speed race team will officially end the 2011 season at the annual awards banquet on January 7th in Watertown, New York. Dunn will be honoured for his 2011 Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Track Championship. Plans for 2012 have not yet been finalized, and with the recent announcement from Can Am that they are switching to Saturday night’s next season, there will be plenty of discussion amongst the team on where they will be racing next year.

Dunn is proud to race under the banner of American Traditions Motorsports for his second full season. With the support of ATM, Pemco Contracting, Number One Speed, Fast Lube of Watertown, Frosty’s Ice Cream, SUNY Canton, Jiffy Dumpster, Finger Lakes Auto Machine, North Country Custom, R & D Fabrication and Bicknell Racing Products, 2011 has been a very exciting season for Billy Dunn.
