Billings Gears up for Super DIRT Week XL; Disappointing 20th Place Finish at Cornwall Caused by Early Race Flat Tire

Craig Revelle – Finish Line Web Design

September 27, 2011

At the beginning of September, Matt Billings and his team had a great beginning to the Mr. DIRTcar 358 Modified Series event at Cornwall Speedway, setting fast time in time trials, and getting a front row starting spot for the main event. Not long after that the rain came, and the race was postponed. On Sunday afternoon at Cornwall, they continued where they left off, and Billings took advantage of his front row position and won his qualifying heat, making it into the redraw for one of the top 12 starting spots for the 125 lap Mr. DIRTcar 358 Modified/Canadian Nationals Series main event.

Billings drew position number eight, and started the race from outside of row four. In a could of dust at the drop of the green flag, Billings lost several positions at the start of the race, and would eventual come to the pits on the first yellow of the race to change a flat tire, which ended up being the culprit of the lap one excursion of the track. Billings returned to the track after a pit stop and rejoined the rear of the field. For most of the race, Billings struggled with the slick conditions, when the race was stopped on lap 75 for a 10 minute break to refuel the cars and make adjustments, Billings was in 16th place. In the final 50 lap run to the checkered flag, Billings dropped to 20th.

“It was tough going out there today”, says Billings. “Losing all of our track position at the start of the race was pretty frustrating, but it is what it is. The car is still in one piece, and now we will go home and get ready for Super DIRT Week”.

Super DIRT Week in Syracuse is one of Billings favorite events of the season, and just like last season, he will team up with Big Block driver Billy Dunn for the Nationwide 150 on Saturday, October 8th.

“I really love coming to Syracuse”, says Billings with a smile. “We have had a lot of success here in the past, and it is just a fun event to be in. I just love the atmosphere and the excitement that comes with being here for the week, and as a driver, I really enjoy the speed that comes with being on such a large track. Hopefully we can have a good week, and better our finish from last year”.
