Lee Gill Wins Big at Brighton Speedway in First Annual Great Crate Race

Craig Revelle – Finish Line Web Design

September 20, 2011

It has been an incredible season for Lee Gill and his Late Model team from Lafargeville, New York. Going into this past weekend he had 13 feature wins and was looking to add to that with events at his hometown Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park on Friday and the First annual Great Crate Race at Brighton Speedway on Saturday.

On Friday night, Gill traveled just up the road to Can Am for their final event of the 2011 season. Gill had already won the 2011 Late Model championship and was looking to add one more win at the track to finish out the season. Gill began the evening with a win in his qualifying heat and led every lap of the feature for his 14th win of the year.

Brighton Speedway is located just of Highway 401 in just west of Belleville, Ontario. They hosted the richest paying Late Model event of the season in this area with their Great Crate Race. It was a 65 lap feature with a total combined purse of more then $20,000. The winner of the race would receive in excess of $5000. Gill began the night with a heat race win, and started eighth in the main event. It didn’t take him long to get the front of the field, and by lap 10 he was battling for the top spot. Gill led through halfway and picked up the Finish Line Web Design Halfway leader bonus of $100, and continued to run strong through out the caution filled race. Gill was challenged once on a restart in the second half of the race but prevailed, leading the remaining laps and taking home the win.

“I didn’t think the race was ever going to end with all of the cautions”, says Gill, referring to the multitude of cautions and red flags that plagued the race right from the beginning. “I have to thank the crew for all the work they put in at the shop and my family and the race fans that come out to the track to watch us race”.

Just a few more events remain on the schedule for 2011. The team may make a return visit to Brighton Speedway this coming weekend for Applefest on Saturday night, and the following weekend they are in Fulton, on Friday, September 30th for the final race of the Go Nuclear Late Model Challenge Series. The final race of the year will be with the World of Outlaw Late Models at Rolling Wheels Raceway on Thursday, October 6th.
