Lee Gill Holds Slim Advantage in Battle for 2011 Can Am Late Model Championship; Looks Ahead to Upcoming Events

The battle for the 2011 Late Model Championship at Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park comes down to own final night. Lee Gill, who lives in Lafargeville, New York just a few short miles from the track is in a very close battle this season with teammate and friend Greg Belyea, and the championship will be decided this coming Friday night. Gill currently holds a slim 10-point advantage.



This past Friday night, Gill began the night by winning his qualifying heat race. In the 20 lap main event, Gill stayed in the top five for much of the race, getting as high as third place, but at the checkered flag he had to settle for fourth, dropping his point lead from 16 points to 10 with one final night remaining to decide the championship.



“It has been a great year, and it is really exciting for everyone that we have a close battle for the championship coming into the final night”, says Gill. “This Late Model class is really competitive this season, and there are a great group of drivers here each and every week”.



This coming weekend Gill will take part in the first ever Crate Late Model event at the Mohawk International Raceway in Hogansburg, New York on Thursday night, September 1st. On Friday night, they will be back at Can Am to decide the points championship. The following weekend Gill and his fellow Late Model competitors will be at Can Am for a weekend event, racing both Friday night and Saturday night. The following weekend will be the season finale for Can Am, plus the Great Crate Race at Brighton Speedway.



“We have some big events coming up before the 2011 season comes to an end”, says Gill. We are really looking forward to the race at Brighton on September 17th. I know there are a lot of Late Models coming, and it should be a great event”.
