With a win in his last start at Brewerton Speedway just two weeks earlier, Gary Tomkins was looking forward to getting back behind the wheel of the Deuce Car this past Friday night. Tomkins also planned to attend Orange County Fair Speedway with the Ray and Debbie Tuit owned 673 team.

At Brewerton on Friday night, Tomkins began the night with the preliminary qualifying heat races. He started from eighth place in his race and advanced to sixth, qualifying for the 35 lap main event. After the qualifier, Tomkins reported back to the pit area and the team made some changes to the car, looking to get the right set up for the feature. He rolled off the starting grid from the 17th position and he moved up early, but after a wreck took place in front of him, Tomkins had to take evasive action to avoid disaster, causing him to lose his track position. He had to restart the race from the rear of the field, and once again began to move up slowly before another accident took place right in his path, forcing another restart from the tail of the field. When the race finally resumed, Tomkins again had to avoid another wreck, but maintained his position. It was evident through the first part of the race that the set up wasn’t working as they had hoped. Tomkins struggled to a disappointing 15th place finish.

“We just missed the set up tonight”, explains Tomkins. “We didn’t have much luck with all the wrecks happening in front of us, but we were just a little bit off tonight. With this strong field here at Brewerton, it is just like a series race, if you are off by even a little, you are racing at the back, and that is how we were tonight”.

On Saturday night, Tomkins had planned to race at Orange County Fair Speedway with the Ray and Debbie Tuit owned team. With Hurricane Irene making her way up the east coast, heavy rains left Orange County a flooded disaster and racing action was canceled.

This coming weekend, Gary Tomkins will be at Lebanon Valley Speedway on Thursday night for the next round of the Big Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series. The race was originally scheduled on August 25th but was postponed due to rain. On Friday night, Tomkins will finish out the regular season at Brewerton Speedway, and will then return to action in the Super DIRTcar Series at Cayuga County Fair Speedway on Sunday.

Gary Tomkins is currently seeking sponsorship for the 2011 racing season and beyond. He has won at all levels of the sport, including the 2004 Mr. DIRTcar Modified Champion. He has 17 Super DIRTcar Series victories, and has won 45 Big Block Modified feature events at Canandaigua Speedway, 12 wins at Cayuga County Speedway, 7 wins at Rolling Wheels Raceway, plus multiple wins in the Sportsman division at each track.
