Gill Makes Dramatic Last Lap Pass for Win at Can Am; ODLM Series Ends in Disappointment

Craig Revelle – Finish Line Web Design

August 22, 2011

Lee Gill and the Gill Racing team had a busy weekend planned with their usual Friday night trip across the town of Lafargeville to Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park, followed by a visit to Brockville and Cornwall Speedway with the Ontario Dirt Late Model Series on Saturday and Sunday.

At Can Am, Gill started the 20 lap feature from deep in the field, and was working his way forward in the first few laps before a tire failure sent him to the pits on lap four. He returned to the field for the restart and made his way forward making a dramatic last lap pass to pick up his 11th feature win of the season.

At Brockville on Saturday night, Gill made his return to Brockville for the first time in several seasons. Gill at one time was the class of the field in the 358 Modified division at Brockville winning track championships in four consecutive seasons from 2000 to 2004. Gill never missed a beat, and set fast time in opening practice for the Late Models and backed that up with a win in his qualifying heat. In the 30 lap main event, Gill started on the front row and ran second for the first part of the race, and dropped to third by lap ten. Just two laps later Gill went off the track in turn three bringing out a caution. He restarted the race from the rear of the field, but brought out the yellow again on lap 16 after being involved in another spin. Gill was credited with a 17th place finish.

The action in the ODLM Series was to move on to Cornwall on Sunday, but a persistent rain forced Cornwall track official to call off the event, ending the 2011 ODLM Series Championship. Gill finished with a fourth place effort in the Ontario Dirt Late Model Series this season, winning the opening race at Brighton a victim of bad luck in the other two events.

This coming weekend Gill will be back at Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park on Friday night looking to extend his point lead and secure another Can Am Late Model track championship.
