Dunn Gets Second Place Finish at Can Am; Canandaigua Rained Out After Qualifying

August 16, 2011

It has been unusually quiet the past month or so for Billy Dunn, just racing weekly at Can Am on Friday nights. His usual Saturday night track, Canandaigua Speedway had been closed the last two weeks due to other events scheduled at the track. Dunn was anxious to return to both tracks this weekend, hoping to build some consistency going into the final stretch of the 2011 season. Dunn would run his Small Block Modified at Can Am on Friday night, and return to Canandaigua on Saturday night pulling double duty, driving his Big Block Modified as well as a Sprint Car with the Empire Super Sprints.

At Can Am on Friday night, Dunn began the evening with qualifying heats. Dunn started the eight lap race from sixth place, and advanced to third. Dunn reported to the pits and made some adjustments to the car, looking to fine tune their setup for the night’s 20 lap main event. Dunn started the feature from inside the third row in the fifth position. After contact with another car on lap two, Dunn went high off the track bringing out the caution. He reported to the pits and returned to the track for the restart, having to come from the rear of the field. It didn’t take long for Dunn to get back into the top five, and by halfway he was running in the fourth position. He used a lap 11 restart to grab the third spot, and made the pass for second with just five to go. Dunn finished the race in second place.

At Canandaigua Speedway on Saturday night, Dunn was pulling double duty, driving his own Big Block Modified, as well as an ESS Sprint Car. In the Modified, Dunn finished fourth in his qualifying heat, and was slated to start the 35 lap feature from the ninth position. In the Sprint Car, Dunn finished his qualifier in seventh, just missing a transfer spot into the A-Main. Dunn had to qualify through the B-Main, and he took the win. He was slated to start the Empire Super Sprints 25 lap main event from the 19th position. Before the main events, rain moved into the area forcing track officials to postpone the remainder of the program. The Sprint Car feature will be run on September 3rd, while the Big Block Modified feature will be made up on a date to be announced.

This coming weekend Dunn will be back at Can Am on Friday night, and then to Canandaigua Speedway for a full racing program on Saturday evening.

Dunn is proud to race under the banner of American Traditions Motorsports for his second full season. With the support of ATM, Pemco Contracting, Number One Speed, Fast Lube of Watertown, Frosty’s Ice Cream, SUNY Canton, Jiffy Dumpster, Finger Lakes Auto Machine, North Country Custom, R & D Fabrication and Bicknell Racing Products, 2011 will be a very exciting season for Billy Dunn.
