Greg Belyea Rebounds With a Win and Second Place Finish at Can Am and Brighton; ODLM Series Events Coming Up Next
Craig Revelle – Finish Line Web Design

August 15, 2011

It was certainly an eventful weekend for Greg Belyea and his Excel Tower Service Racing team. First up was a Friday night event at Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park as Belyea and the rest of the Late Model competitors raced against NASCAR driver and Speed TV Commentator Kenny Wallace. On Saturday night it was back home to Brighton Speedway.

Friday night didn’t start well for Belyea as he was making his way to the track and the team’s hauler broke down just past the Gananoque exit on the 401. A water pump failure sent Belyea scurrying for a backup plan and not long after there was another truck and trailer on its way to meet with Belyea and unload the essentials from the broken down vehicle into the new one. Belyea made it to the track in time, and was hoping to turn his night around with a solid run at Can Am. He started third in his qualifying heat race, and advanced to second place at the checkered flag. In the 20 lap main event, Belyea rolled off the starting grid from the fourth position. After several attempts at a lap two restart, Belyea was now up third, and continued in that position until halfway where me made his move to take over the runner-up spot. Belyea finished the race with a solid second place run.

“We had a good run here tonight. We wanted to come out strong and have a good night tonight. It was fun to race against Kenny Wallace, it is a shame they he wasn’t able to finish the race”, says Belyea. “We almost didn’t even make it here tonight with the hauler breaking down on the way here. I have to thank every that offered us a helping hand while we were broke down”.

Brighton Speedway was up next on Saturday evening, and the night started off with preliminary qualifying heat races. Belyea started his heat race from sixth place and charged to the front of the pack taking the victory. In the 25 lap main event, Belyea lined up from the 11th position at the green flag and began to move his way forward. The car was working well, and by halfway he was ready to make his challenge for the lead. By lap 17 Belyea had the top spot and cruised to the win.

“I am very happy with our weekend, it was a great recovery from the previous week”, says Belyea. “I really have to thank Lee (Gill) Chuck and Kevin (Meyers) for coming up and helping us with our program tonight at Brighton”.

This coming weekend Belyea will be back at Can Am on Friday night with the Crate Late Model, and then will run the final two races of the Ontario Dirt Late Model Series on Saturday and Sunday night with the open motor at Brockville Speedway and Cornwall Speedway respectively. Belyea had mixed results last year in the ODLM swing through Eastern Ontario, crashing out early at Brockville, and then rebounding with a solid top five finish at Cornwall. Belyea is currently third place in points, only nine points out of the lead. A Series champion will be crowned on Sunday night at Cornwall.

Greg Belyea and Excel Tower Service along with the Brighton Speedway would like to remind everyone about the Great Crate Race taking place at the Brighton Speedway on September 17th, 2011. The unprecedented $5000 to win Late Model event will see cars from all over Ontario, New York State, Pennsylvania and beyond battle for a purse of more then $20000.
