Billings Gets Third Place Finishes at Both Mohawk Raceway and Brockville Speedway

Matt Billings may have found a new favorite track with his recent switch to Mohawk Raceway on Friday nights. The 18 year old racer from Brockville, Ontario has adapted will since switching Friday night venues just a few short weeks ago, and he was hoping for another good run as they traveled back to the Hogansburg, New York track on Friday night. Their hometown Brockville Speedway was also on the team’s schedule for Saturday night.

Mohawk Raceway has become a favorite amongst many drivers with the major upgrade that the track went through a few seasons ago. Matt Billings recently made the switch to Mohawk, and has improved his finish with each race. He was looking forward to another visit this past Friday night. Qualifying heats were up first, and Billings lined up from the fifth position for the eight-lap event. The car did not handle well for Billings, and at the checkered flag, he was back in sixth place. Upon arriving back in the pit area, Billings and his team discussed what changes to make on the car, and made some adjustment before the 25 lap main event. Billings started back in the 21st position for the feature race, but It didn’t take long to realize that the changes made were in the right direction, as he started to move through the field. After miraculously avoiding disaster on the backstretch on the very first lap as several cars came together, Billings continued to move through the field, and was already up into the top ten at lap five. As the race hit the halfway point on lap 13, Billings had moved into fourth, and then grabbed the third position on lap 18. On the ensuing restart, he ducked underneath the second place car, but could not complete the pass, and settled for a hard fought third place finish.

“The car was really good tonight, definitely the best that we have had since we started racing here”, says Billings. I thought we had second place there on that last restart, but I couldn’t quite make it. It was a good run for us, and hopefully we can come back here next week and finish just a little better”.

Next on the weekend schedule was Brockville Speedway, and again, the night began with the usual preliminary qualifying heat races. Billings started his heat from third place and quickly moved to the front of the field, using the outside lane to take the lead, and cruise to the win. The team made just minor adjustments for the feature, keeping up with the changing track conditions. He rolled off the starting grid from the 10th position, on the outside of the fifth row. With ten laps in the books, Billings was now up to fourth, and took over third spot with a late race restart.

“It was a good run for us again tonight, but we need to be just a couple positions better”, says Billings. “We will keep working at it, and hopefully we can get back to victory lane again soon”.

This coming weekend, Billings will be back at Mohawk International Raceway on Friday night, and then back home to Brockville Speedway on Saturday evening.
